Understanding pH Balance
pH stands for “potential of hydrogen” and measures how acidic or basic your water is based on the amount of hydrogen ions (H+) present.
The pH scale ranges from:
- 0 = most acidic
- 7 = neutral
- 14 = most basic (alkaline)
This scale is logarithmic, meaning each number changes acidity by a factor of 10. For example, water with a pH of 6.0 is 10 times more acidic than water with a pH of 7.0.
Ideal Spa pH Range:
7.4 – 7.6
Maintaining proper pH levels is important because:
Low pH (Below 7.0)
- Can damage spa equipment and plumbing
- May cause skin and eye irritation
- Can corrode spa components over time
High pH (Above 7.8)
- Often causes cloudy water
- Leads to scale buildup
- Reduces sanitizer effectiveness
Balanced pH helps maintain crystal-clear water while protecting both bathers and your spa investment.
